Sportingbet to Sponsor Portsmouth FC

Posted under Betting by Peter on Thursday 17 September 2009 at 1:34 pm

August’s top ten bookmakers list revealed that Sportingbet was at number 9 and it seems they are on the up! It appears that the recent signing with Portsmouth FC will be very beneficial for the club and in their favour to have such a successful and trusted bookmaker supporting them.

Sportingbet are the latest sportsbook to side with and sponsor an English Premier League club at the start of this season. There has been several new partnerships develop and begin and it seems that we could expect to see many more as sportsbook fight for spots at the top clubs.

Sportingbet will be the main provider of gaming products for Portsmouth FC fans. As well as access to the Portsmouth website, the sportsbook will also be allowed to advertise at the club’s Fratton Park ground, using LED perimeter advertising boards whilst taking advantage of special access to the VIP visitor’s suite.

Other recent partnerships include Betfair with Manchester United and Asian sportsbook 188Bet, which has been one of many recent football deals for the sportsbook, including the likes of Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan football clubs. 188Bet’s sponsorship deal seems to be a little more intense with the initial contract set out to last for a minimum of 3 years.

As if football clubs haven’t got enough on their plate, what with transfer bans and relegation, now they are being bombarded with fantastic offers and face the big decision of which sportsbook will be the right choice, both financially and in terms of ambitions and aspirations globally to help support the future success of the clubs.

Safe Stolen from Betfred Shop

Posted under Betting by Peter on Tuesday 15 September 2009 at 4:16 pm

Burglars stole £2,000 from a safe that was stolen from a betting shop, cut it open and dumped it in an isolated field, police believe. The safe, which is the size and weight of a small, fully-packed domestic fridge, was found by a farmer in a field near Cowbridge at the weekend.

Police investigating a burglary at the Betfred betting shop, in Windsor Road, Penarth, several days earlier believe the safe found in the field off Aberthin Lane, Cowbridge, was taken from there. Detectives say the burglary was well planned and the field where it was cut open was carefully chosen for its remoteness from street lighting and houses.

The betting shop burglary happened between 6pm on September 6 and 9am the following morning. Police believe the safe was taken later to the field where it was forced open between 5.30pm on September 10 and 9.15am the following morning when it was found.

Acting sergeant Miguel Sutcliffe said:  “They got into the betting shop by drilling though a rear security door. They removed the safe from behind the counter area.”

Jamie Ryan, deputy manager at the shop, was the first on the scene the morning after the burglary.

He said: “When I arrived the place was in a bit of a mess and it took a bit of time before I realised what had happened. They had broken in through the back and cut wires out of the alarm. It is a very heavy safe and I would say it would have needed at least five people to lift it.

I have never seen anything like this before.”

Police believe that around £2,000 was in the safe which was probably taken to the field on a flatbed lorry. They suspect a disc cutter was used to cut the hinges of the safe door which was found to one side of the safe. Some documents were left behind in the safe, but no cash.

The nearest house to the field is about a third of a mile away and lighting around the area is poor. But detectives say that a large lorry would have been conspicuous in the narrow lane and the noise of the cutting equipment would have been loud.

Acting Sgt Sutcliffe said:  “Aberthin Lane is quite isolated. It runs between Primrose Hill and Penylan Road in Cowbridge. A large vehicle would have been needed to transport the safe and we are appealing for any information about this incident. The safe is very heavy and it would have taken at least two people to carry it. If anyone saw or heard anything suspicious between the hours in question we would like to hear from them.”

He said he had worked on a similar case about two years ago where a stolen safe was taken to a field and opened.

Nobody at Betfred was available for comment.

Worldspreads Sells Irish Branch

Posted under Betting by Peter on Monday 10 August 2009 at 12:31 pm

Spread betting company Worldspreads has agreed to sell its Irish arm to the local management team, the company said in a statement today.

Worldspreads, which enables clients place spread bets on a range of securities in financial markets, operates in Dublin and London. It said that in deciding to sell its Irish arm it had taken into account the “inefficient” maintenance of two fully fledged and separately regulated trading desks in the same time zone. It was also concerned that the weak Irish economy would affect the performance of the Irish business, and had begun exploring a rationalisation process when local management in Ireland suggested a buyout.

The company said the move would deliver many of the savings that it was looking for without the expense associated with a costly redundancy programme and without the staff of the Irish business losing their jobs. Under the terms of the deal, the company formed by management members will buy the operation for approximately €9.9m in cash as well as proceeds from the placing of 1,885,579 existing WorldSpreads ordinary shares. In a statement, the company said the sale would “considerably strengthen” the group’s balance sheet and financial position and provide additional resources to expand in international markets.

UK Gambling Tax

Posted under Betting by Peter on Wednesday 5 August 2009 at 12:56 pm

Betting exchange group Betfair, Britain’s largest online betting business, has become the latest bookmaker to publicly attack the Treasury’s online gambling tax rates and refused to rule out a move offshore.

The privately owned firm, one of Britain’s most successful internet startup companies, issued a thinly veiled threat to move its UK business to Malta should the competitive disadvantage of paying tax in Britain worsen.

The chief executive, David Yu, said Betfair, which already channels almost all of its non-UK business through low-tax operations in Malta, remained committed to the UK and had no plans “at the moment” to move.

Of the Treasury’s 15% betting tax on profits, he said: “It is not ideal. It does put us at a competitive disadvantage.” He declined to rule out abandoning the UK at some stage in the future, though he said the company was “very proud” of its achievements as a British business.

468x60_Football

Yu’s comments came after William Hill yesterday confirmed it is moving its online business to Gibraltar, shattering a 2001 “gentleman’s agreement” with the Treasury not to do so. Ladbrokes is expected to respond with a similar move, possibly announced as soon as tomorrow when it delivers half-year results.

Ladbrokes, William Hill and Betfair already operate UK-targeted gaming websites, offering poker and online slot machines, from offshore tax havens – as does government-owned bookmaker the Tote.

An exodus of online betting operations will make a mockery of Labour’s efforts to establish Britain as a global centre for gambling companies and regulation. Already higher tax levels mean no online poker or casino business operates in the UK under a licence from the Gambling Commission.

The departure of sports betting firms will leave the UK’s entire online gambling market – the largest legal betting market in the world – beyond the scope of both the Gambling Commission and the Treasury. Meanwhile, the government two years ago introduced some of the most liberal laws on gambling advertising anywhere in the world.

Betfair published limited financial figures for the year to 30 April showing top-line operating profit up 29% to £72m, despite a heavy investment programme. Revenues have doubled in three years to £303m and the company has net cash of £133m. Much of last year’s growth came from outside the UK.

The group’s core UK sports betting exchange continued to show double digit growth during the year, said finance director Stephen Morana. The performance is in contrast to William Hill, which yesterday issued a mild profits warning, blaming a poor run of luck on flat racing and football results.

The exchange model, which “matches” rather than “takes” bets, means the company is never exposed to sporting results. Betting exchanges work like stock exchanges, matching buyers and sellers of fixed odds wagers.

Betfair said it was matching an average of 6.4m transactions in real time every day – more than every stockmarket in Europe.
