Last week, Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski signed a bill limiting all land-based gambling in Poland to licensed casinos, and banning slot machines in all non-casino venues. Discussion is about to begin on a new draft legislation that would introduce further changes to Polish gambling laws. The proposed legislation would place severe restrictions on online gambling in the country, and would also place a ban on the sponsorship of Poland’s sports teams by companies in the e-gaming industry.

Under the proposed legislation it will still be legal to bet on sports in Poland, but Polish teams would not be allowed to wear shirts advertising online sportsbooks. For example, by early 2010 France will open its doors to the world of online gambling, and Ligue 1 clubs Lyon and Marseille will start wearing shirts carrying the logo of a major European sportsbook starting in January. Other countries have taken the opposite route: online sportsbook sponsorship of teams in Russia and Ukraine is currently illegal, and Portugal’s football league recently lost its sportsbook sponsorship after the country’s state-controlled gambling operator won a battle in court.

This proposed legislation in Poland is still preliminary, and the outcome could go either way. The proposed changes are certain to bring up a lot of arguments from both sides. There is no estimation on when a decision will be made.

US Beal Bank announced it will bid alone for three Atlantic City-based Trump casinos, managed by Trump Entertainment Resorts, which is currently under bankruptcy protection.

Beal Bank offered Wednesday to convert its USD486m (EUR322.6m) loan to the casinos into equity in Trump Entertainment Resorts. As a result, the company would emerge from bankruptcy with no debt.

The body of a poker player who went missing over a week ago, has been found in a North London canal, police confirmed today.

John Regan, 30, has not been seen since leaving a pub in the early hours of November 19. His disappearance was described as “completely out of character” by friends and family, who have been desperately trying to track him down.

He was apparently in an area with no CCTV coverage at the time of his disappearance near Camden market.

Poker players were united in the search for John Regan, setting up the domain www.findjohn.co.uk, which linked to a facebook page. Over 2600 members joined the search for the popular poker player.

The campaign to find John was also supported by a number of celebrities, such as comedian David Mitchell of Channel 4 comedy Peep Show, and TV host Claudia Winkleman.

His death is not being currently being treated as suspicious.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Although we await formal identification, we are satisfied that the deceased is 30-year-old John Regan of Chalcott Road.”

UEFA has named and shamed the five clubs they suspect to be involved in the European football betting scandal that shocked the sporting world last week.

German police led an investigation in what they described as the “biggest ever” match fixing scandal to hit football, with more than 200 games thought to have been affected, including UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches.

The clubs said to have been at the centre of the scandal are KF Tirana (Albania), FC Dinaburg (Latvia), KS Vilaznia (Albania), NK IB Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Honved (Hungary).

“UEFAand the national associations are facing a case of organised crime which exceeds the investigative power of sports jurisdiction, a UEFA statement read.

“UEFA will file criminal complaints, together with the relevant national associations, as soon as possible against clubs, officials and/or players in those countries concerned.”

UEFA has also said they believe there may be three referees involved with the scandal, and there could even be a an in-house official somehow connected to it all!
